During my one day in St Kitts, we caught a taxi from the cruise port to the beach for $30. We then spent the day at Reggae Beach bar where we rented chairs for $5 each and an umbrella for $10. The beach is protected by a bay with great swimming and fine sand beaches.

The area is quite busy and you’ll see many locals selling stuff and offering pictures with wild monkeys (agree on the price first!). During my recent visit, I checked out some of the resorts on the island to scope out where I’d stay on a longer visit in the future. Compared to St Kitts, Nevis is less populated, less crowded, and more remote. The catamaran itself is luxurious, with comfortable seating and lounging, private restrooms, and is a great medium size to meet new people without experiencing crowds. Snorkeling is great throughout the Caribbean and St Kitts is no exception. Below, learn how I spent my one day in St Kitts for a sample one-day itinerary in port. Make a point of enjoying the local favorites such as jerk chicken, candied sweet potatoes’, huge lobsters, suckling pig among others.

One of the most popular things to do on the island is to hop on the brightly colored train for an adventure of a lifetime. The train follows the scenic old railway trail that functioned as the main transportation for sugar during the island’s sugar manufacturing days. This spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by the British military to protect the island from a French sea attack during the European colonization in the Caribbean. The railway was constructed in the early 20th century to transport sugar cane from St Kitts’ sugar plantations to the sugar factory in Basseterre. The railway tour normally takes 2h 45 minutes (2 hours by train, 45 minutes by bus) and takes you around the eastern part of the island.

(Be careful of the cars and crowds when crossing.) St. George's Anglican Church has a stormy history, as it was destroyed and rebuilt three times in three centuries. Independence Square, encircled by stately Georgian manors, was once known as Pall Mall and was home to Basseterre's infamous slave market. The food of St. Kitts is a direct reflection of its history, culture, and the rich natural resources of the island.
